Maine Coon Colours
According to the Cat Fanciers’ Association, Maine Coons are available in a variety of 75 different color combinations. There are two ways to describe a cat’s appearance. “Color” refers to the actual color, while “pattern” refers to the way those colors display. With Maine Coons, there is an exciting array of solid colors and their dilutions including blue, black, chocolate, cream, red, gray, silver, and all white!! Once you combine color with pattern, you’ll see remarkable coats of smoke, shaded, tortoise shell, tabby, and tuxedo, to name a few.
What is a smoke or shaded cat?
Smoke Color Maine Coons are a solid color cat that carries the inhibitor gene which suppresses the color in the hair shaft. This means that the cat’s hairs are dark at the tips but have much lighter colored bands near the bottom. All solid colors can be affected by the inhibitor gene which labels them Smoke plus the underlining solid color. The three types of cat coat markings that are in the “shaded” category include: chinchilla, shaded and smoke and each is distinguished by the extent of the shading on individual hairs. In chinchillas, only the very tip of the outer coat is colored. With the shaded pattern, a quarter of the hair tips exhibits the color. In the smoke pattern, half of the hair tips displays the color. As you can imagine, this gives the coat a fascinating ombre effect and looks like liquid motion when the cat is moving.
What about the cat’s eye color?
All kittens are born with blue eyes and they usually change to their true color around 8-10 weeks old. Green, gold, orange, brown, blue, and gray are what our cats typically have as adults.

Maine Coon Cats has a distinctive wild (almost feral) appearance. While some Maine Coons can have a distinctive feral look they are absolutely not an exotic hybrid of any type (lynx, bobcat). It is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, specifically native to the US state of Maine, where it is the official state cat.
Maine Coons average near 19–40 in length, nose to tail. Male size is near 14–25 lbs (Adult), Female size is about the same typically slighter build. Historically the Maine Coon were bred for it’s hunting skills but now they are oversized cherished lap cats. This fantastic temperament is what we strive for in every single litter.
